Wireless Case Studies: Setting an Example for Wireless ROI

Mr. Case Study

In today's uncertain economy, Information Technology Managers are looking for any way possible to count their pennies and conform to very strict operating budgets in order to help 'keep the lights on'. One of the more noticeable trends Outr.Net has seen during this time of tight budgetary constraints is a reprioritization of project deployment efforts. Unfortunately, uncertainty among I.T. managers on whether to proceed with a project or how to move the project forward can paralyze priorities and leave new technology projects stalled within last year's budget.

During the current economic downturn, you may be inclined to hold off on strategic projects. So, is now the right time to reconsider projects with a tangible ROI? Your original return on investment (ROI) calculation should still be one of the key drivers in making a go, no-go project decision.

Outr.Net's last newsletter (Where's the Payback in Wireless Applications?), discussed how to identify payback opportunities for wireless I.T. projects and methods to improve your chances for attaining a positive return on your investment. Now is a good time to reread this article and review for yourself why wireless was the right decision for you earlier.

Does Moving Forward with your Wireless Project Still Make Cents?

Reevaluating your decisions in light of project parameter changes is always a good idea, but you may want to first simply consider if economic changes have really impacted your project parameters. For example, are your sales people still mobile (i.e.: away from their desks 20-30% of the time)? Does your Information Technology still include critical, time sensitive applications? Could getting real-time information to your field service workers still improve your customer service performance? Chances are the ROI factors that made your wireless project advantageous last year are still there!

During 1999 and 2000, Outr.Net saw an emphasis on what the I.T. industry typically calls the 'Big Bang' approach to wireless project deployment. Companies took full advantage of the fast paced economy and the whirlwind of activity surrounding emerging technologies such as wireless and felt very confident about engaging in long-term deployment efforts. More often then not, wireless projects during this period were an integral component of a long-term corporate strategy. Although often taking months to deploy, corporate executives were convinced that launching an all inclusive, end-to-end wireless solution was just as important as being the first to market.

Most of us no longer have the luxury of funding long-term or moderately risky projects. But, as Outr.Net will illustrate for you with several wireless deployment case studies, a phased implementation approach, a focus on process, a clear understanding of project goals and a little guidance from the experts will reduce your development cycle-time, reduce the risk of an unsuccessful deployment and ultimately improve your ability to capture your target return on investment -- even during these tough times.

Wireless Internet: ROI Factors by Market summarizes some of the challenges, solutions and benefits of wireless applications

Your wireless applications do not necessarily have to be long, cost prohibitive projects. Clear development goals and a phased implementation can reduce your development cycle-time and get your new processes out in the field. In other words, 'Keep it simple Silly' (KISS approach) for your initial wireless deployment. Take some time after each deployment to measure the impact of the release and gain enough experience to fine-tune future phased releases for the greatest return on your investment.
